Mattress Information

Mattresses should last between 5 to 15 years depending on your budget and the quality. We recommend speaking with our experts to help find the best mattress for you and your families needs.

There are many reasons to purchase a new mattress.

1. Your Existing Mattress is Old

Experts recommend that you get a new mattress about every 7 to 10 years. How long your mattress lasts often depends on several different factors, including your environment, your sleep habits, and more. Areas where dust mites are more likely to collect, or sleep habits that are rough on your bed can cause it to wear out even sooner than the recommended 10 years. If your bed is old, think about getting a new one.

2. Your Kids Are Growing

Kids sleep a lot because they need sleep to grow and develop properly. If they spend that time tossing and turning in fitful sleep instead of deep sleep it can affect their ability to thrive. Hand-me-down mattresses are not the best option for kids; finding the bed that gives them great support and comfort is much better.

3. You’re in Pain

If getting out of bed each morning is a painful experience, it might be that your mattress is causing some of that pain. Consider whether you get better sleep when you’re in another bed—such as a hotel or at a family member’s house—and if that is the case, your bed is probably not helping your pain. The end result is often an inability to get good sleep, which can impact several different areas of your health and your life.

4. You Are Getting Older

As your body ages your mattress needs change. As you get older your body might require more support or some additional comfort in order to be able to sleep soundly each night. Even if you have slept on the same kind of bed for many years, it’s a good idea to see new mattress options before you just buy the same kind over and over again.

1. Remove all of your bedding, including the mattress pad or protector. (If you don’t have a mattress protector or topper, make that your next purchase. They can’t keep everything out, but they do offer some protection against mites and bacteria working their way in.)

2. Vacuum the top and sides of the mattress using a freshly sanitised upholstery vacuum attachment. Move-in slow circles to pick up as much as possible

3. Sprinkle the mattress top with a layer of baking soda and let it sit for several hours. If you’re able, add some sunlight and let it sit for a full 24 hours. Baking soda deodorizes, removes moisture and breaks up dirt and grime.

4. Vacuum again with the attachment, getting up all the baking soda.

5.Air out the bedroom by opening windows or turning on a fan.

6. Clean the bed frame and box spring. Wipe down metal and wood frames and vacuum fabric headboards.

7. Place clean bedding (that has been washed in hot water and dried on high heat) back on the bed.

Buying The Right Quilt

While a lot of quilts can be machine washed at home, we always highly recommend to have them dry cleaned. The quilt will last longer if dry cleaned.

You should replace your duvet when it starts to feel limp, the filling isn't as evenly spread or the filling starts to come through the casing.

As your duvet rests on top of you at night, rather than taking any of your weight, it should last longer than your pillows. The Sleep Council suggest that a duvet should last at least 5 years, but a good quality duvet, with high quality filling should last at least twice that.

Look for a duvet with a cotton cover, this will make the duvet more breathable, keeping you cooler and keeping the duvet cleaner. A higher thread count case also helps your duvet last, this stops any stray feathers from seeping out.

Pillow Information

A pillow protector is the easiest way to do this, and means your pillows will stay cleaner for longer. They pop onto your pillow, underneath your pillowcase. Bedtime beauty and hair products often contain oils that can go straight through your pillowcase, onto your pillow. A protector will stop anything from reaching your pillow, and affecting your lovely filling.
When you're making your bed, plump up your pillows to keep them feeling fuller.

If you suffer from allergies then it's always best to replace your pillows more often, especially if you start to notice that you're suffering more frequently.
If you suffer from allergies then it's always best to replace your pillows more often, especially if you start to notice that you're suffering more frequently.
Replace your pillows when you start to notice they're sitting flat (even after a good wash). A pillow that's lost its shape will start to give you neck pain (and that means less time snoozing).

Vacuum dust off of the pillow, then spot clean with a clean, damp cloth and a small amount of mild detergent. Then lay the pillow flat to air dry. Polyester: Wash with warm water on the gentle cycle, preferably a few pillows at a time to balance the load. Be sparing with the detergent.
